I honestly wonder where this attitude comes from, because maybe aside from Creationists (who think they are trying to understand the world, they’re just doing an embarrassingly unscientific job of finding out), I don’t see how believing in God is supposed to be synonymous with being satisfied with not understanding the world. It definitely doesn’t do anything to stifle my sense of wonder—if anything, it encourages it. Do people know a lot of religious people who think we shouldn’t try to understand the world, or do they project this attitude onto them? Or, worse, do they take Richard Dawkins at his word about what religious people are like? Because that’s about like taking a televangelist’s opinion on atheism.
